(Another) new Lappy!

I know, I know, I just bought one of these just last October. But this was not any kind of impulse buy. What happened was, my 15" Powerbook that I bought in October has developed an annoying hardware glitch in its sound system somewhere. The problem is not going away, and besides that there are a couple keys on the keyboard that are sticking at odd times, so it really needs to be sent in to Apple to be repaired. It's covered under AppleCare and even its initial 1-year warranty.

So, no problem right? Well not really. I don't know how long I'll be Macless, but it could be for up to 2-3 weeks and I can't afford to be without a Mac for that long. I have to be cranking on my thesis Web site and plus I have some client work that I need to be responsive to. And the fall semester starts in a matter of weeks, so my opportunity to send my computer in is getting shorter. So I shopped a little on eBay and found what I was looking for at a decent price. The unit is smaller and lighter than my current machine, and will be easier to cart around campus to classes, plus it will make a nice MP3 jukebox when I'm playing on the PC, which is where it will probably live most of the time.

So far things seem to be ok .. the seller has contacted me and seems to be on the level, and I should have it by the end of the week if the wind's blowing the right direction. Keep your fingers crossed for me ..

But he's such a nice guy!

That's the North Korean dictator/despot toasting Madeleine Albright, Clinton's former Secretary of State, in 2000.

Today Tony Snow "blasted" (yeah right, nice word, AP, no bias there either) the Clinton Administration's foreign policy of "flowers and chocolates." He then said that they've learned from that mistake.

This picture in light of current events makes the Democrat strategy of appeasement such an obvious blinding mistake that it defies hyperbole. As the lawyers say .. res ipsa loquitur.

Bottom story of the day

Web perils advise switch to Macs
Security threats to PCs with Microsoft Windows have increased so much that computer users should consider using a Mac, says a leading security firm.

Sophos security said that the 10 most commonly found pieces of malicious software all targeted Windows machines.

In contrast, it said, none of the "malware" were capable of infecting the Mac OS X operating system.

This is a photo blog by a Russian who recently was allowed to visit North Korea. His English is not perfect but you can get a fairly decent general sense of what it is like there. The scariest thing was how many times he mentions that his guide forbade him to take pictures in various locations.

Just .. damn scary. This is the country that's now lobbing ballistic missiles into the air as "tests".
